πŸ• let your dog make some decisions

"When an 85-pound mammal licks your tears away, and then tries to sit on your lap, it's hard to feel sad."
- Kristan Higgins

Happy Wednesday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?
Corgis were a favorite breed of the most recent Queen of England, but which breeds were popular with King Henry VII?

Daiquiri Wins a Very Interesting World Record
Anyone who has picked up a Guinness Book of World Records has likely found a few records listed that surprised them. This story fits into the category of very unique records. Daiquirt is an Australian Shepherd who has earned the world record after successfully removing 21 socks from people's feet in just one minute.

The dog traveled with his owner from Canada to Italy to set the record on TV. This isn't their time record together, either. Daiqurit and his owner hold a total of 12 world records, including the most tricks performed in a minute, the fastest time to complete five wall runs, the most clothes retrieved from a washing line, and more.

Allow Your Dog to Make Decisions
People make decisions daily that have consequences, but they also allow freedom. Dogs may not understand the consequences of their choices, but they should still be allowed to make some decisions independently.

If you never leave anything up to your dog, it can make them more stressed and anxious. Without choices, dogs may feel insignificant and helpful. Studies have been done by people like Dr. Susan Friedman, a psychology professor who pioneered Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) on pets. She believes that dogs with the freedom of choice will be less likely to have behavioral issues.

Giving your dogs a choice will build confidence and independence and help them direct their energy. Let dogs decide if they want to greet other dogs or humans. Give them options of which toy they want to play with. Ask them if they are ready to come inside and give them the choice. You can find parts of the routine that they can make choices about without impacting their safety.

One of my favorite choices is on a walk. I allow my dog to choose which direction we go on Saturday mornings. I have lots of time to spend walking, so I leave the choice up to the dog. Some weekends, we walk about the block a few times in a circle, and other times, we explore a whole new part of the neighborhood. Find ways to incorporate options for your dog and see how it improves their demeanor.

Dogs In Supporting Roles
Dogs offer unparalleled support to humans in various aspects of life, transcending their roles as loyal companions. Their innate ability to empathize and provide unconditional love fosters emotional well-being, offering a sense of comfort and companionship that can alleviate stress and loneliness. Beyond their remarkable social and emotional contributions, dogs also serve as invaluable service animals, assisting individuals with disabilities and providing a helping paw in various therapeutic settings. Their acute senses and instinctual protective nature enhance our security, making them reliable guardians. Whether offering a sympathetic ear during tough times or actively contributing to our physical and mental health, dogs enrich our lives with unwavering support, demonstrating the profound bond between humans and these remarkable four-legged friends.

Sometimes, however, as loving and supporting as our pups can be, we may need more support than they can provide. That's where Talkspace comes in.

Talkspace believes that everyone deserves access to high-quality mental health care. That's why they've built a team of thousands of licensed therapists and psychiatric providers across all 50 states, so you can get the support and guidance you need no matter where you are.
