🐕 10-year-old works to open town's first dog park

"Ever consider what dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul—chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we are the greatest hunters on earth!"
- Anne Tyler

City's First Dog Park is Opened Thanks to a Young Girl
Glenwood City, Wisconsin, didn't have a dog park until a 10-year-old town resident lobbied the local government. Riley Unruh wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up, and she wrote an opinion piece for the third-grade paper that helped spark the idea for a dog park in the town.

Riley showed the paper to her dad, who is a councilperson on the city council. She asked if she could present her idea to the council. She devised the location, the materials needed, and how it would be funded. Within a month, she had a full plan ready to go.

In November 2022, the council approved a plan, and Riley began raising funds. She made flyers and visited local businesses. There were also donation boxes set up locally. After a year of hard work, Riley's dream was finally realized. Now, all the dogs in this community have a place to play, thanks to Riley!

Give the Gift of a Pet Portrait
Modern pet portraits are a lovely way to showcase the incredible bond between pets and their owners. There are many unique artistic styles to choose from when selecting the best portrait for your house (or for a loved one). Portraits can capture the pet's personality and essence.

Realistic portraits can resemble the pet in a more realistic tone, showing details and textures of the pet's features. Pop art is a fun and colorful way that uses bright colors and patterns to make sure it's eye-catching. Other options include impressionistic, cartoon or caricature, and minimalist.

Keep Your Pup Stress-Free During The Holidays
During the holidays, it's essential to prioritize your dog's well-being to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable time for your furry friend. Here are some tips to keep the holidays relaxed for your pup:
  1. Maintain a consistent routine: Stick to regular feeding schedules, walks, and playtime to provide stability for your dog.
  2. Create a quiet space: Set up a safe and quiet area where your dog can retreat if the holiday festivities become overwhelming.
  3. Watch for potential hazards: Be mindful of decorations like tinsel or toxic plants that could harm your dog, and keep them out of reach.
  4. Inform guests about your dog's needs: Let guests know about your dog's preferences and encourage them to approach calmly to avoid unnecessary stress.

What is Old Dog Disease?
The Vestibular System helps create a sense of balance and aids dogs in coordinating their body's movements. When this system is out of whack, it impacts coordination and balance. The canine idiopathic vestibular syndrome is often referred to as Old Dog Disease. The most common symptom is loss of balance. Dogs might tilt to one side or stumble around a bit. The dogs might also experience abnormal eye movements, head tilts, nausea, or vomiting.

Thankfully, dogs can recover from vestibular disease. It usually takes at least a week to get back to normal. It's important to contact your vet if your dog is experiencing these symptoms. The treatment plans will vary but may include medications like motion sickness medicine. It's also good to clear the pathways for your dog and remove any obstacles that might make it hard for them to move around freely. Make sure to keep the area safe and work with your vet until the symptoms improve.
