Dog Discovers Owner's Breast Cancer Early
Trisha Allison is a 50-year-old mother of two and owner of Luna, a 2-year-old Greyhound mix. She was lying on the couch one day watching tv, and Luna jumped up on her and started pawing, sniffing, and nudging at her right breast. This behavior was very abnormal from her normal snuggly and calm manner.

After 45 minutes, Allison started feeling a bit of pain in her right breast and made an appointment to get it checked out. When she got her biopsy results two weeks later, she discovered she had breast cancer, and they caught it early. She has had two operations to remove the lump so far and is waiting to find out if she'll need additional chemotherapy.

Allison is forever grateful for Luna and her persistence in alerting her owner that something was wrong. She might not have found the lump without her dog's help.

Dog of the Day: Meet Sir Benjamin Waffles
Our reader, Frances, sent in this sweet photo of Sir Benjamin Waffles. He loves wearing his hat, especially on super sunny days. He pulls off the hat, and he's protecting those eyes from the sun's bright rays. Now, we're thinking about snacking on some watermelon; anyone else?

Pekingese Dogs: Are They Right For You?
The Pekingese dog is one of the breeds first bred for Chinese royalty. It descends from the famously woolly dogs of Tibet. It's a breed that becomes attached to its owners and loves being comfortable and hanging out at home.

Pekingese are popular breeds. They enjoy relaxing but still need daily walks for exercise. The walks should take 15-20 minutes unless you have a high-energy pup. This allows them to wear down their nails, go to the bathroom, and socialize a bit. Be aware of hot temperatures because this breed can be susceptible to heat stroke with its long coat and short snout.

With an ideal weight range of 10-14 pounds, this breed is considered a toy breed. You should feed them a high-protein diet with a good balance of nutrients. Do not overfeed to help keep them in the ideal weight range.

Pekingese have a beautiful, long, thick, silky coat. It requires daily brushing to keep it healthy and to remove loose hair. There will likely be more extreme shedding in the spring and fall months. Bathe your Pekingese dog at least once a month and use a detangling shampoo to keep their hair in good shape.

This breed is very loved and sweet, but they have a tendency to be a bit stubborn once they get comfortable. Would you get a Pekingese?
