| | Did You Know...? What three breeds fall under the umbrella term "pit bull"? (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Running a Shelter Saved His Life Mike Favor was addicted to drugs for 13 years, but in 2016, he was working to get sober, and he met Honey, an 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy with a heart condition. He was occasionally volunteering at a humane society when he heard about her but he didn't want to take her home because she only had four months to live with her condition, and he didn't think he could handle a loss like that. Once he met her, his opinion changed. He was determined to give her the best four months possible. That one encounter changed Favor's life. Honey ended up living seven full years in his care. She inspired the Freedom Home, a 4,000-square-foot rescue center and sanctuary for neglected or abused dogs in Staten Island. The facility is also home to his venture, Pitbulls and Addicts, which helps connect recovering addicts with dogs. Favor says they are "two misunderstood breeds" that need care and acceptance. Favor connects with these dogs and their transformations. He helps cover medical expenses and spends time with them, building connections. He likes dogs more than he likes people and often gives people very frank feedback when they call him about "problem dogs." Favor and his partner built the facility. They raised money using GoFundMe and Instagram, where Favor has gained over 180,000 followers. He sees himself in many of these dogs and wants to help them find people to appreciate them. It's an incredible organization and a great way to give back. | | A Pitbull Lab Mix Might Be Perfect for Your Family The cross between a Labrador Retriever and an American Pitbull Terrier is an energetic and friendly breed. If you are looking for a playful dog for your family, this might be a fantastic fit. They are brave, obedient, and intelligent dogs and have become more popular recently. The mix has a few nicknames: lab pit mixes, Pitadors, Pitador retrievers, or Labrabulls. The most common coloring is black with white accents, but they can be born with many variations. Their coats are short, so they don't do well in extreme temperatures. Depending on the size of the parents, the mix can weigh anywhere from 45 to 90 pounds. Lab pit mixes are very friendly and love to be companions. They need quite a bit of attention and have high energy, so it's important to provide them with playtime, affection, and exercise. Early training will help them learn the ropes, but if you plan to be away from your dog for long periods, this breed probably won't be the best fit. If you are looking for a playful pup and are ready to train and help a dog socialize, a Labrador Pitbull mix might be the exact breed you're looking for. | | 5 Dog-Centric Jobs For Dog Lovers -
