πŸ• Shelter dog helps save a life before finding a home

"You can trust your dog to guard your house, but never trust your dog to guard your sandwich."
- Lani Lynn Vale

Happy Monday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?
Joke: What's the difference between a businessman and a dog?

(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!)
One Shelter Dog Gives the Gift of Life Before Being Adopted
Kevin (formerly known as Rockie) lived in a shelter in Columbia, Tennessee, just waiting to be adopted. In July, a one-year-old pup named Ice came to the shelter in dire condition. The staff knew that he could only be saved by another dog. Ice was suffering from a horrible case of fleas and was being eaten alive. His blood cells and iron levels were severely depleted, and he needed a blood transfusion.

The staff knew the perfect dog, Kevin/Rockie, was two years old at the time and a bit of a chunk. He had such a great temperament and was easy to work with. His health made him a great candidate to donate blood. The entire process takes around an hour, and thanks to the staff and this generous pup, Ice is now doing great and enjoying his second chance at life.

The shelter awarded Kevin/Rockie a medal for being such a brave boy. But his real prize came just a month later. His forever family, the Johnsons, fell in love with him, and after 198 days in the shelter, he was going home. The staff shed a few tears when saying bye to him, but this lifesaver is getting his own chance to begin again
What is a No-Kill Animal Shelter?
There are so many animal rescue organizations around the world. Some are called No-Kill shelters, and you might wonder what that means. No-kill animal shelters make a concerted effort to save any and all animals. End-of-life decisions are only made as an act of mercy. No-kill shelters measure their saving rate and work hard to be above 90%. Every treatable animal gets treatment.

Each organization has its philosophy regarding euthanization, so it's important to learn more about any rescue to ensure it aligns with you before supporting it. The ultimate goal of the no-kill movement is to have transparency and commitment to life-saving measures whenever possible.

The name implies the opposite exists, but it can cause places to lose volunteers, supporters, and adopters. The Humane Society is attempting to step away from the "no-kill" term and just focus on animal welfare and quality of life and care. We always recommend researching organizations as much as possible and asking questions.

DOTD - Meet Mio
Mio is a Shih Tzu rescued by Diamond when he was just six months old. He has a neurological disorder, and she was luckily able to rescue him before he was euthanized.

This magical little guy might have special needs but is incredibly special to Diamond. He loves playing outside and enjoying the spring weather. We are so glad she shared him with all of us. Enjoy your play sessions, Mio!
