Vet Student Rescues Overweight Pup
Frannie was an eight-year-old Golden Retriever who had become severely overweight at 125 pounds and was sadly going to be euthanized. A veterinary student named Annika Bram saw a post about the dog on Instagram, where she learned that the dog had lived outside and had developed callouses on her legs. Frannie reminded her of the dog she had lost the year before, so she immediately knew she wanted to help.

Bram contacted the rescue organization to check on Frannie daily. She was being treated for pneumonia and other complications, and they knew that Bram would be the perfect person to help Frannie. She brought her home and started a TikTok channel, Franniesfight, to document their journey. Over three months, she worked with Frannie to get her hypothyroidism under control and lose 31 pounds.

Thanks to Bram, Frannie is now able to run after a tennis ball and she's enjoying her second chance at life!
How to Help Your Dog Lose Weight
Most situations aren't as drastic as Frannie's, but it's fairly common for dogs to become overweight. More than half of the dogs in the US are. It's not healthy for them and it's important to work on getting them back in the ideal range. Your best bet is to combine a proper diet, meaningful exercise, and plenty of hydration.

The first step is determining just how much your dog should be eating in a day. Work with your vet to determine the proper amount of food to feed them and what type to help them get back to a healthy weight. It's more complicated than the guidelines on the side of a food bag. Activity levels, health, breed, and age determine how much food they should get. Weight-loss foods are available for dogs. They are typically high in moisture and fiber and low in calories and fat.

Increase the time you spend walking your dog or playing with them to help with exercise. Your vet can help you determine how much exercise your dog needs. If your dog has joint issues, low-impact activities like swimming can be beneficial. Any activity you choose will be healthier for you and your dog and can help you increase your bond.

By getting your dog back into a healthy weight range, you can greatly improve his or her chance for a long and healthy life. If you believe your dog might have a few pounds to lose, start the conversation with your vet today.

It's National Pizza Party Day!
Certain food items are just better than the rest. Pizza is a favorite for so many of us. This poor St. Bernard seemed to agree. He is not supposed to have his head on the table, but he just couldn't resist staring at the few pieces left of the pizza and hoping someone would give him the go-ahead.

We are sure this boy got a few treats for showing restraint and not going after his human's Italian pie. We hope you enjoy a slice this weekend!
