πŸ• Train your dog to help around the house

"Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he's owned a dog. A dog can show you more honest affection with a flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of happiness."
- Gene Hill

Happy Friday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?

Leo Helps With the Household Chores
You might know Dr. Leo Marvin from the movie What About Bob, but he shares his name with this adorable Cavapoo who lives in Washington. Not only does this pup's adorable energy bring his family so much joy, but he's also happy to help around the house.

Don't we all wish our dogs would help out around the house a little more? Often, they are the ones making the mess. Our hats are off to you, Dr. Marvin, for helping out your humans with the lightwork. Follow his Instagram account for more fun. Read on to see if you can train your pup the same way!
Train Your Pup to Help Around the House
Dogs can be trained to do various things, so why not add a few helpful household chores to their repertoire? If you need some inspiration to get started on chore training, here are some examples of tasks that dogs have taken on in other families. See if you can work with your dog to pick up one or two of these skills.
  • Fetch the newspaper. Take a walk down the driveway each morning and encourage your pup to grab the newspaper and bring it back. Eventually, they might just start doing this alone, saving you the trip.
  • Sort laundry. One owner has trained her dog to sort the dirty clothes. She made four piles and worked on the name of each one. Now, she can give the dog an article of clothing, say a name, and her pup places the clothing in the right basket.
  • Close doors. Many couples have one person who leaves doors open all over the house. You can train your dog to go around behind them and close those doors. This will save you an injury from an opened cabinet door. This technique uses target training, where a dog learns to nudge a specific target.
  • Pick up trash. Work with your dog on a specific cue that leads them to the trash can. Practice with trash so they won't be tempted to eat, and show them where to drop it. Just be careful your dog doesn't start throwing things in the garbage that aren't trash.
  • Pick Up/Find/Bring Items. Dogs are great at finding things. Choose a few items that are regularly lost and start training your dog to identify them by name. Once they've got it, you can send them on a mission to find the remote or your keys. It's fun for them and helpful for you!
  • Wake up the kids. Once your dogs know your family members' names, you can send them in for a wake-up call. This is helpful because who doesn't want to wake up to a dog?

A Little Treat:
  • ✅ Did You Know: It's a trick question! They can sort of tell time. Their owner's smell will dissipate at a stable rate, so they can tell when it's been longer. They can also plot time by how hungry they are.
  • 🐢 DOTD: Give your pup the spotlight by submitting them for the dog of the day! This month's theme is paws in summer. Showcase your pup's favorite summertime activity, whether that be napping in the sun, playing in the pool, or hanging out with a buddy. Reply to this email with the best pics of your pooch, a short description, and their name to be featured in an upcoming newsletter.
