| | Did You Know...? How many breeds are currently recognized by the American Kennel Club? (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Meet the Happy New Addition to the American Kennel Club The American Kennel Club recognized a new breed at the beginning of 2024. The Lancashire heeler is a small dog that is known for their natural smile. It's a rare herding breed and has lots of energy. This heeler is typically black and tan with short coats. They weigh around 17 lbs when fully grown and measure about one foot tall at their shoulder. These dogs are very smart and have been used on farms for years to help drive cattle and get rid of rats. Officially, the Lancashire heeler is described as courageous, happy, and affectionate towards their owners. These dog's signature smile is caused by the way their lips pull back and it makes them look extra friendly. If you are interested in this breed, you'll want to ensure you have plenty to keep them busy because they are happiest when they have a job. It's amazing to see these dogs get recognized. They are considered a vulnerable breed, with just about 5,000 on earth right now. They might be hard to find, but they are definitely easy to fall in love with! | | How Exactly Does a Breed Get Recognized? The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884 and is the oldest and largest registry of purebred dogs in the world. There are about 200 breeds officially recognized. Throughout the year, there are over 22,000 events put on by the American Kennel Club and its affiliates, and any registered dog can participate in those events. So, how exactly does a breed get recognized by the AKC? There are a few steps and qualifications they must meet. There must be a National Breed Club that sends in a written request to the AKC to compete in the Miscellaneous Class, and they must meet these criteria: - More than 100 active household members in the breed (or participating in the National Breed Club.)
- A sufficient population in the United States (minimum of 300 dogs) with a three-generation pedigree.
- The dogs must be located in at least 20 different states nationwide.
- AKC must review and approve the club's standard, constitution, and by-laws.
There are currently ten breeds competing in the Miscellaneous Class. Once the breed competes in this group for at least a year, they can be presented to the Board of Directors for full recognition, but sometimes it takes a few years. Hopefully, the new breed, Lancashire heeler, will get full recognition soon. | | Tips and Tricks to Check Your Pet for Fleas and Ticks Ticks, those pesky blood-sucking critters, are every pet owner's nemesis!
