πŸ• What dogs do when we aren't home

"It all started when my dog began getting free roll-over minutes."
- Jay London

Happy Monday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?
Joke: How do dog catchers get paid?

(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!)
Do You Wonder What Your Dog Goes When Left Alone?
While you're working all day behind a desk, your dog lounges and lives their best life in your favorite spot on the couch. Or do they? You aren't alone if you've ever wondered what they get up to during the day. This article outlines six possible things your pup might be doing while you're out. We sure hope someone catches these on camera!
  • Sofa Olympics: Your couch becomes a trampoline. Dogs use the cushions to put together a full gymnastics routine, sprinting and jumping from one end of the couch to the other. Hopefully, they stick their landings each time.
  • Trashcan Treasure Hunts: When you close the door on your way out, a dog's nose starts working. Your kitchen trash can is filled with wonders, and if there's any chance that your dog can explore, they might find some serious treasure.
  • The Great Sock Heist: Do your socks disappear sometimes? Many people blame their washing machine, but your dog might be the mastermind behind the missing socks.
  • Window Watchdog: Dogs spend a big chunk of their day patrolling the neighborhood with their eyes out the window. They take this job very seriously and ensure nothing moves outside without their supervision.
  • Solo Dance Party: There might not be any music playing, but your dog is likely taking multiple solo dance breaks throughout the day. Their tails are wagging, and they are spinning around, leaving us wondering what kind of music they hear in their heads.
  • Pillow Fort Architect: If you've come home and noticed pillows and cushions moved around, your dog might be building their pillow forts while you're gone.

Is Your Pup Chill?
Recognizing when your pup is relaxed is crucial for their well-being and understanding their emotional state. Here are key signs to look out for:
  1. Loose Muscles: When your pup is relaxed, their muscles will be loose, not tense or rigid. You might notice them lying down with limbs sprawled comfortably.

  2. Natural Posture: A relaxed pup will have a natural posture, with their body neither stiff nor hunched. They may also stretch out or roll onto their back, exposing their belly.

  3. Soft Eyes and Ears: Relaxed dogs often have soft, partially closed eyes, and their ears may be in a neutral position rather than pinned back or forward.

  4. Gentle Breathing: Observe your pup's breathing pattern. When relaxed, their breaths will be slow, steady, and quiet.

  5. Contentment Signs: Look for signs of contentment such as sighing, lip licking, or gentle tail wagging. These indicate that your pup is at ease in their environment.

  6. Responsive but Calm: A relaxed pup will respond to stimuli but in a calm manner. They won't react with excessive excitement or fear.

  7. Relaxed Tail Wagging: While tail wagging is often associated with excitement, a relaxed pup may wag their tail slowly and softly, indicating contentment rather than arousal.

Understanding your pup's relaxed state not only strengthens your bond but also helps in creating a conducive environment for their overall well-being and happiness.

For When You Want To Relax
If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone. That's why these new cannabis gummies caught our eye.

Mood is an online dispensary that has invented a "joint within a gummy" that's extremely potent yet federally-legal. Their gummies are formulated to tap into the human body's endocannabinoid system.

Although this system was discovered in the 1990's, farmers and scientists at Mood were among the first to figure out how to tap into it with cannabis gummies. Just 1 of their rapid onset THC gummies can get you feeling right within 5 minutes!

15 Independent Dog Breeds
When you add a dog to your family, you're taking on a level of responsibility, and you need to make sure you can provide the dog with enough attention and exercise. Some dogs are more independent than others. If you are looking for a dog that is more likely to be content hanging out on their own during the work days, check out one of these 15 independent breeds. These are the ones that are likely to partake in all the hilarious activities we just listed.
  1. Basenji - This breed can entertain themselves, and they are not overly clingy.  They are also a quiet dog, known for being "barkless."
  2. Greyhounds - Although they are known for racing, this breed is pretty low-energy and independent.
  3. Shiba Inu - This breed is sometimes compared to a cat because of its self-sufficiency. They do not require constant attention.
  4. Whippet - Similar to a Greyhound, these dogs don't mind spending time alone to lounge.
  5. Bullmastiff - Despite being a large breed, this dog is relatively inactive indoors and loves relaxing.
  6. Chihuahua - If you provide this little dog with some toys, they are perfectly content to hang out independently.
  7. Shar Pei - This breed has a calm demeanor and is not overly demanding of attention. They typically do fine on their own for longer periods.
  8. Basset Hound - A little moderate exercise is all that this breed needs; they are not known to be high-energy. They will happily lie in bed during the day while their owners are away.
  9. Akita - These dogs are independent but loyal. If you give this dog decent exercise every day, they will happily chill out at home while you're gone.
  10. Alaskan Malamute - Originally bred as a sled dog, this dog does need daily exercise. If you take them for walks and get them outside, they will be content to lay low while you're at work.
  11. Cairn Terrier - If you have a smaller space, this breed is a good size for an apartment. They can entertain themselves for the day on their own.
  12. Dachshund - With a little mental stimulation, this pup is good at entertaining themselves while at home. They are playful, curious, and very independent.
  13. Miniature Schnauzer - This intelligent breed can adapt to various environments and handle being left home alone during the day.
  14. Scottish Terrier - This breed is not overly affectionate. They don't mind being on their own, and they are independent.
  15. French Bulldog - Leave these dogs with toys and a comfortable bed, and they will be just fine to be on their own. Their energy levels are low, so they have to just relax during the workday.

How Much Exercise Does Your Pup Really Need?
Determining how much exercise your dog needs depends on various factors such as breed, age, size, and overall health. Understanding your furry friend's individual requirements is essential for maintaining their physical and mental well-being.

For small dog breeds like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, around 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day is typically sufficient. This can include short walks, indoor playtime, or interactive games to keep them engaged.

Medium-sized breeds such as Beagles or Bulldogs generally require between 1 to 2 hours of exercise daily. This may involve longer walks, play sessions in the backyard, or activities like fetch and agility training to stimulate their minds and bodies.

Larger breeds like Labrador Retrievers or German Shepherds have higher energy levels and typically need at least 2 hours of exercise each day. This can include brisk walks, jogging, swimming, or vigorous play sessions to prevent boredom and maintain their muscle strength.

It's essential to tailor the exercise routine to your dog's specific needs and abilities, considering factors like age and any health issues they may have. Regular physical activity not only helps to keep your dog fit but also promotes mental stimulation and prevents behavioral problems. Always consult with your veterinarian to ensure your dog's exercise regimen is appropriate for their individual requirements.
