A Day in the Life at Doggy Daycare
Could you imagine being paid to hang out with dozens of dogs every day? Joana Baldera works at a dog daycare and boarding facility where she helps care for as many as 60 dogs daily. She recently shared what a day in her life is like at work.

When Baldera gets to work, she prepares her space for the dogs that will be with her that day. She stocks the room with clean water bowls, mop buckets, poop bags, wipes, and other necessities. Before anyone arrives, she checks to see if there will be any special accommodations needed that day, such as dogs with grooming appointments or dogs who like some alone time.

Meal preparation is important for the dogs that are spending the night. Some dogs have special meal prep or allergies, so it takes organization and careful prep to ensure everyone gets the right food.

Playtime and entertaining the dogs are the fun part. Balerda says that bubbles are a favorite among the dogs. Sometimes, the dogs even do crafts, like holiday cards, to send home to their families. She said her favorite part of the job is watching dogs find themselves in each other. They find friends and connections, making Balerda's day that much better!
Should Your Dog Go to Daycare?
Doggy daycare is a great resource for pet owners who have long workdays and need some assistance with their pups, but it's not the right fit for every dog. If you are considering sending your dog to daycare, there are a few things you should consider first.

Most quality facilities will offer a trial period. You'll drop your dog off for a shorter period, and they can see how the dog reacts to the environment and other dogs. Dogs must fit well with the pack that is already there to ensure a positive space.

Here are some questions to find out if your dog is a good candidate for daycare:
  • Does your dog enjoy the company of other dogs? Dogs should have impulse control and be able to manage themselves in situations with other dogs. If they are overly friendly or afraid of other dogs, daycare might be overwhelming.
  • Can your dog tolerate others? Daycare will bring a variety of dogs, people, and situations. Ideal daycare candidates should be able to avoid conflict and handle a little chaos.
  • Does your dog share resources well? Some dogs struggle to share toys, water, or their favorite spot. If they get aggressive, daycare will be a challenging place for them.
If you think your dog is a good fit, check the local listings and find a daycare near you to lock in a trial period.

Ruby is a Natural Caregiver
At doggy daycare, you'll find a variety of personalities. Some dogs are the playful type that like to get every other pup fired up; others are the lazy ones who prefer naptime, but Ruby is a special pup. She is a natural caregiver.

Ruby is a German shorthaired pointer who spends time at daycare each week. One of the humans working with Ruby posted a video that went viral on TikTok because of its pure sweetness. The video shows Ruby petting the other dogs at daycare just like a human does.

What a sweet girl helping to make others feel welcome and comfortable. We hope every daycare has a dog like Ruby!
Tips for Maintaining Your Dog's Joint Health
Just like humans, dogs can experience joint issues that affect their mobility and quality of life. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep your furry friend's joints healthy and strong.
  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight puts added strain on your dog's joints, leading to increased wear and tear. Keep your pup at a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise to reduce the risk of joint problems.

  2. Provide Regular Exercise: Regular, low-impact exercise helps strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and promote joint health. Activities like walking, swimming, and gentle play sessions are ideal for keeping your dog active without putting excessive stress on their joints.

  3. Consider Joint Supplements: Consult with your veterinarian about incorporating joint supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids into your dog's diet. These supplements can help support joint function and alleviate symptoms of arthritis or joint stiffness.

  4. Maintain a Comfortable Environment: Provide your dog with a comfortable and supportive bed, preferably with orthopedic features. A supportive mattress can help relieve pressure on your dog's joints and promote better sleep quality.

By implementing these tips into your dog's care routine, you can help maintain their joint health and ensure they enjoy a happy, active, and pain-free life by your side.
