🐕 A newly discovered reason dogs wag their tails

"A well-trained dog will make no attempt to share your lunch. He will just make you feel so guilty that you cannot enjoy it."
- Helen Thomson

Happy Thursday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?

Winner, Winner! Dog Helps Collect the Lottery Prize
Paul Riley won a $4 million prize from the Massachusetts State Lottery. When Paul arrived to collect his winnings, he brought along his best furry friend, Raven. Paul shared his plan for some of his winnings when claiming his prize.

The man is such an animal lover that he is planning to donate some of his cash price to the Animal Rescue League. This organization has been helping animals in Boston since 1899. They provide veterinary services, adoption, and much more. He is also buying his wife a new car. We bet there's a treat or two in the works for Raven as well. Congrats Paul!

We believe in better for the whole pack—because your pets are family, too. #YourPackDeservesIt
Harold is a one-year-old rescue dog, and this picture was taken of him enjoying his first snow of the year by our reader, Bella. Originally being told that Harold was an Aussie/Beagle mix, his DNA test later revealed that he's actually a mix of 15 different breeds. Clearly, he has some great genes and has found a great home! Bella describes him as the silliest boy, and as full of love. He isn't stingy with his (french) kisses and enjoys playing and running around. Thanks Bella for sharing Harold with us!

It's All in the Rhythm
The question of why dogs wag their tails has been studied time and time again. An animal researcher, Taylor Hersh, wanted to understand this better after watching YouTube videos of wolves and realizing that their tails hardly wag. She became interested in what had changed in the evolution of domesticated dogs.

Hersh and her team of researchers released their findings this year and determined that humans likely altered how a dog's tail moves without realizing it. They suggest that dog tail wags make people happy, and humans were selecting dogs with their traits.

When dogs wag their tails, it's a rhythm that triggers joy in the human brain, similar to the impact of music. Humans associate a wagging tail with a friendly dog, making them more likely to be adopted and taken home. This has likely helped the animals evolve to wag their tails even more.

The team reviewed previous studies of this part of the dog's body. They compared them to wolves, foxes, and other canine relatives. But domesticated dogs start wagging their tails as early as three weeks old and it moves quicker and more often than any wild animals. So, it was likely a trait that changed over time to make them more appealing to their human counterparts.

We hope you enjoy the rhythm of your dog's tail a little more going forward!

Paws and Personalities: Matching Dog Breeds to Your Lifestyle
Choosing the right dog breed is crucial for a harmonious relationship between you and your furry companion. By considering factors such as energy levels, space constraints, and activity preferences, you can find a breed that perfectly complements your lifestyle.

For active individuals who enjoy outdoor adventures, breeds like Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds are ideal companions. These energetic breeds thrive on exercise and love participating in activities like hiking, running, and playing fetch.

If you prefer a more laid-back lifestyle, consider low-energy breeds such as Basset Hounds, Bulldogs, or Shih Tzus. These breeds are content with moderate exercise and enjoy spending time relaxing indoors with their humans.

For city dwellers or those living in apartments, small and medium-sized breeds like French Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Pugs are well-suited. These breeds adapt well to urban environments and require less space than larger breeds.

Ultimately, the key to finding the perfect match lies in understanding your own lifestyle and preferences and selecting a breed that aligns with them. By choosing a dog breed that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle, you can ensure a fulfilling and rewarding relationship for both you and your canine companion.
