πŸ• Steps to potty train your older dog

"Did you ever walk into a room and forget why you walked in? I think that's how dogs spend their lives."
- Sue Murphy

Town Gets Their First Paw-Trol Officer
The Hopkinsville Police Department fell in love with a pit bull named Bolo. He originally arrived at the station in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, as part of a program with Christian County Animal Shelter. As a result, Bolo was only supposed to stay for a day and participate in their social media posts as a way to find a forever home.

When the day was over, Bolo went into his transport kennel, and his head dropped slightly. Everyone's hearts melted, and they simply could not let him go. The police department adopted him on the spot and signed him up for duty. He was sworn in as the team's first Paw-trol Officer. The mayor gave a beautiful speech, and they got his inky paw print and photo.

This town will be a safer and happier place with a dog on the force. Congrats, officer Bolo

Tips to Potty Train an Older Dog
Many people visit shelters and rescue organizations and fall in love with adult dogs. They can be amazing companions and typically have less spunk than new puppies, making them easier to entertain and keep up with. However, not all adult dogs have been successfully potty trained, so you might need to do some work when you bring them home. Follow these five steps from a dog trainer, and you can train your dog of any age to potty outside.
  • Set your dog up for success. There are a few great ways to determine what your dog is doing when they aren't on a potty break. They'll need to be supervised, confined to a crate or small room, or tethered to someone on a leash. This helps you keep an eye on them and practice the routine.
  • Visit the toilet target once an hour while they are awake. Whether you're training your dog to pee outside or on a pee pad, give them the opportunity to use the bathroom each hour that they are awake.
  • Be patient while waiting for your dog to use the bathroom. It's advised that you wait up to five minutes. Stay still and silent until they go. Once they pee or poop, you should calmly praise them and give them a treat. Bring them back to their designated spot between breaks if they don't go in five minutes.
  • Reward a job well done. Don't make the dog return to their confined area afterward, because you don't want them to associate that taking care of business will get them back to confinement. Instead, try playing with them or giving them some positive attention for 10 minutes or so after they go.
  • Repeat. With consistency and patience, dogs will learn to go potty outside or on their target. Keep track of the times when your dog is going, and make sure to support them as you reduce the amount of potty breaks you're giving them.
If your dog does have an accident, fight the urge to scold or punish them. It could push them to hide where they go to the bathroom, which you don't want. Make sure to clean up using an odor eliminator so they don't return and use the bathroom in the same spot again.

While you're working on that potty training, you'll need quick access to your leash. Read on for a custom leash hook that you can make yourself!

Do Dogs Dream?
The age-old question of whether dogs dream has intrigued pet owners and animal enthusiasts for years. While we can't peer into the minds of our canine companions, scientific evidence suggests that dogs do indeed experience dreams. Similar to humans, dogs undergo different sleep stages, including REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is associated with dreaming.

Observations of sleeping dogs reveal telltale signs of dreaming, such as twitching paws, moving eyes, and occasional vocalizations. These behaviors mimic the actions dogs display when they are awake and engaged in various activities. It's believed that during REM sleep, dogs may be reenacting experiences from their daily lives, processing emotions, or simply enjoying a mental replay of activities.

Researchers have conducted studies on animals' brain activity during sleep, showing similarities between the neural patterns of dreaming in humans and dogs. The discovery of these shared patterns suggests that, like us, dogs likely engage in dream-like experiences.

While we may never fully comprehend the content of a dog's dream, the consensus among experts is that our furry friends do, in fact, enter a dream state during sleep. So, the next time you see your dog twitching in their sleep, it's quite possible they're off on a whimsical adventure in their dreamland.

Create a Custom Leash Hook
Having a leash easy to grab by the door is helpful, especially when you need to get your dog out quickly without much notice. This DIY project will allow you to customize your leash hook and make it fit perfectly with your decor using all the right colors. Just follow the steps, and you'll have a masterpiece to hang on your wall in no time.

DIY Leash Hook
You'll need: One hook, a 5" x 7" wooden plaque, paint, paintbrush, pencil, and paper.
  1. Trace the back of the hook onto a piece of paper.
  2. Sketch out your dog's silhouette on the piece of paper. Use the hook where the tail would be on your pet.
  3. Cut out the silhouette and trace it onto the plaque. If you want the background painted, you can do that first and then trace the silhouette on top of the dried paint.
  4. Paint the silhouette and fill it in.
  5. Once the first few coats dry, add the fur details.
  6. Use a small paintbrush to add a little texture and appear like hair.
  7. Make the plaque look vintage by sanding down the corners lightly.
  8. Screw the hook to the plaque. Paint the screws to match.
You're all set. Hang it up on the wall near the door and have your leash ready to go at any moment!

Building Credit Pawsitively
In the realm of responsible pet ownership, managing finances effectively is as crucial as providing love and care. "Building Credit Pawsitively: Using Credit Responsibly While Caring for Your Dog" sheds light on the intersection of fiscal responsibility and canine companionship.

Pet ownership brings inherent expenses, from routine veterinary visits to unforeseen medical emergencies. Utilizing credit cards wisely can be a valuable tool in navigating these financial waters. Establishing a dedicated budget for pet-related expenses ensures that credit cards serve as a supplementary resource, not a financial crutch.

Credit cards can offer perks beneficial to dog owners, such as cashback rewards on pet store purchases or discounts on veterinary services. Responsible credit usage involves paying balances on time, avoiding unnecessary debt, and capitalizing on card benefits to offset dog-related costs.

Furthermore, using credit cards for pet expenses can contribute positively to one's credit history if managed diligently. Timely payments and responsible credit utilization can enhance credit scores, opening doors to better financial opportunities.

In essence, "Building Credit Pawsitively" advocates for a harmonious balance between financial prudence and pet care. By leveraging credit responsibly, dog owners can ensure a financially sound and fulfilling journey alongside their beloved furry companions.
