πŸ• Read a presidential memo regarding the first dog and his biscuits

Happy Tuesday! Here's the scoop:

A President Had to Beg Staff to Stop Giving the First Dog Biscuits
On February 6, 1992, an important memo was sent out to the White House staff from the desk of President George Bush. The letter kindly advised all staff members to refrain from feeding the first dog, Ranger. He was starting to get a bit overweight as the presidential pooch, and it was likely his ability to win over all the staff members that got him so many treats.

The dog was a bit chubby, and the president had to step in and stop the extra feedings to help him shed that extra weight. The dog even had to wear a "do not feed me" badge. The official memo asked all offices to take a "formal pledge" that read, "We agree not to feed Ranger. We will not give him any biscuits. We will not give him food of any kind." The memo even asked that people tattle on others who are caught feeding him.

The president loved the dog but jokingly referred to him as a friendly blimp. To help him lose weight, the first pup was allowed to run around Camp David and get exercise in the woods there. Ranger was a brown and white Springer Spaniel named after the Texas baseball team. He was also known to terrorize the squirrels that ran on the White House lawn.

Ranger did his political duty of keeping White House staff entertained and happy. We commend his hard work!

Meet Gaia Our Dog of The Day: Sponsored by Butcherbox
We believe in better for the whole pack—because your pets are family, too. #YourPackDeservesIt
Gaia is a rescue from Aruba, so the snow was brand new for her this year. She experienced her first snow in New Jersey on a chilly day at the end of January. Her owner, Joyce, says that she adapted to this weather quickly and loved playing in (and eating) the snow. We are sure that she also appreciates her winter fashion-look that helps keep her warm. After playing outside, she loves snuggling up under the blankets and warming the hearts of her humans. Thanks Joyce for sharing Gaia with us!

The Best Apps for Dog Parents
Technology has advanced incredibly since President Bush dealt with his dog's weight. As a pet parent today, you have many apps and tools to stay informed about your pup's health and well-being. These apps will give you additional information and reminders to make it extra easy to care for your pup.
  • Pup-to-Date - This app is best for new pet parents. It will help you get into a routine with your dog and track important things like bathroom breaks, meal time, and medications. You can set reminders and share them with other family members so everyone is on the same page.
  • Rover - Exercise is important for dogs, but some families don't have a schedule that allows flexibility for daytime walks. Rover can help you match with a dog walker in your area that can help your dog meet their daily exercise needs while you're at work. You'll also have access to their network of pet sitters.
  • Whistle - This is the best tracking app. It works with an accompanying GPS device and can send you notifications when your dog leaves a safe area. The app also relays information about their activity with goals and activity badges. There are even alerts for behaviors like excessive licking and scratching.
  • Pet First Aid from the American Red Cross - This free app is helpful if you have an emergency with your pet. You'll find step-by-step instructions for dozens of common scenarios, like if your dog gets in a fight or has an allergic reaction.
  • Woof - If you worry about your dog at home if something happens to you, the Woof app will give you some peace of mind. It uses pet-set timers linked to your home address. If you've been gone too long, there is a three-tiered response where the Woof staff will try and reach out to you, then your emergency contacts, and then they will initiate a wellness check.
  • Sniffspot - This app provides you with information about safe, private spaces where your dog can get out and play. It connects you with people who have fenced-in backyards, beach access, hiking trails, and even agility courses. It's great for shy dogs who struggle with public dog parks.

Collagen's Role In Supporting Joint Health For Dogs

Collagen, often associated with promoting skin elasticity and healthy hair in humans, plays a vital role in supporting joint health for our canine companions as well. As dogs age, they may experience wear and tear on their joints, leading to stiffness, discomfort, and decreased mobility. Collagen, a key component of cartilage and connective tissues, can help alleviate these issues and promote overall joint wellness in dogs.

By providing essential amino acids and nutrients needed for collagen synthesis, collagen supplements can help maintain the structural integrity of your dog's joints, cushioning them and reducing friction during movement. This can be particularly beneficial for senior dogs or those with arthritis or other joint conditions.

Moreover, collagen supplementation may aid in the repair of damaged cartilage and ligaments, supporting the healing process in dogs recovering from injuries or surgeries. Whether in the form of chewable treats, powders, or liquid supplements, incorporating collagen into your dog's daily routine can contribute to their long-term joint health and mobility.

From running in the park to playing fetch in the backyard, ensuring your furry friend's joints are in top condition allows them to enjoy an active and fulfilling life, from nose to tail.

A Special DIY Keepsake Coffee Mug for Dog Lovers
There is a large crossover between dog lovers and coffee drinkers. Maybe it's because dogs like to wake us up early to get their outside time and breakfast! No matter what the reason, we've got this adorable coffee mug tutorial so you design your own paw print cup. It's perfect for those early morning backyard play sessions.

DIY Paw Print Mug
You'll need: A coffee mug, paintbrush, glass paint, paw print silhouette, x-acto knife, tape, and rubbing alcohol
  1. Clean the mug with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Print out a paw-print silhouette online or trace your dog's profile. Cut it out using an X-acto knife.
  3. Tape it to the coffee mug. Paint the mug. Be careful around the edges of the stencil so the paint is smooth.
  4. Carefully remove the stencil from the mug and allow the mug to air dry for at least an hour.
  5. Once it's dry, place it in a cool oven (this is important to avoid the cup cracking.) Turn the oven to 350 degrees and oven cure for an hour. Turn off the oven and let the cup fully cool in the oven.
  6. You're ready to use the mug. Since it's such a special item, we recommend hand washing and taking extra care when using it.
