Patient Man Brings Dog Home After Two Months of Trust Building
Each rescue dog has their own unique personality; some have dealt with tough times in their lives so far. It can take them a little longer to warm up to potential adopters than brand-new puppies. But anyone who has adopted a dog knows the beauty that comes from this special bond.

Joe Rotunda lives in Austin, Texas, and fell in love with a dog named Alva. This dog arrived at Austin Pets Alive in November 2020 when she was just five months old. She was covered in fleas, malnourished, and suffering from wobbler syndrome. For the next two years, she was in and out of different fosters and shelters.

Rotunda saw her on the Austin Pets Alive Instagram and knew that they were meant to be together. He visited her every day for two months to help her learn to trust him. He knew that so many others had given up on her, but he was determined to make it work. Her Parkinsons-like motor instability requires physical therapy and additional accommodations in her home. Luckily, Rotundha took care of everything by installing ramps and padded corners.

Now, Alva lives with Joe Rotunda and his other dog. He is constantly inspired by her infectious spirit. We love a forever home story!

Ten Breeds That Will Play All Day
Each dog breed has its own special qualities. Some people want a lap dog to cuddle up and chill with them all day. Other people want a pup that will frolic and play with them at parks and in the backyard. These ten breeds have been ranked as the most playful, so you'll be filled with endless joy and entertainment!
  1. Labrador Retriever - Labs carry their puppy-like energy right into adulthood. Their love and energy will keep the whole family entertained.
  2. Golden Retriever - A relative of the lab, it's easy to see why this breed is another family favorite. They are playful but gentle, so they are great for younger kids.
  3. Boxer - Have you seen the Boxer bounce? It is impossible to ignore their playful energy when you watch them run and play in a yard or park. These dogs are muscular and strong, but extremely playful and goofy at heart.
  4. Beagle - These incredibly smart dogs are curious and playful. They never turn down an adventure. If you have young children, this breed is fantastic, thanks to their size and demeanor.
  5. Pembroke Welsh Corgi - Corgis have distinct body shapes, but their little bodies are filled with energy and spirited personalities. This friendly breed loves learning and training, so you can show them some great tricks and let them show it off.
  6. Australian Shepherd - Aussies are high-energy and need lots of exercise. Throw a frisbee or take them to an agility course to play and get some of that energy out. It's a perfect fit for an active family or owner who loves being outside.
  7. Dalmatian - These spotted beauties love playing fetch. They will play long after your arm is worn out. Running for the ball or a toy allows them to prance, gallop, and release some of their energy. If you've seen 101 Dalmatians, you know how much personality these puppies can have too.
  8. Boston Terrier - The breed is called the "American Gentleman," but they will get rowdy during playtime. These dogs love tug-of-war and wrestling. Their small size makes them easy to bring along on your adventures, and they can be polite while out on the town.
  9. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - With a history of being a royal favorite, these dogs might seem prim and proper, but they have a playful side. They love being around people and enthusiastically play interactive games.
  10. Poodle - These dogs are among the smartest breeds and are associated with elegance. But they absolutely love to get rowdy in the park. Play sports and interactive games with them to provide mental and physical stimulation.

The True Cost of Owning a Dog: Tips For Future Pet-Parents
Bringing a furry friend into your home is a heartwarming experience, but it's essential to understand the financial responsibilities that come with dog ownership. From the initial adoption fees to ongoing expenses, being prepared for the costs associated with owning a dog is crucial for both your pet's well-being and your financial stability. Here's a breakdown of the expenses and some budgeting tips to help you manage them effectively.

The initial costs of owning a dog can vary depending on factors such as breed, age, and location. Adoption fees typically range from $50 to $500, while purchasing from a breeder can be significantly higher. Additionally, you'll need to budget for essential vaccinations, which can cost around $100 to $300, as well as supplies such as a collar, leash, bed, crate, and toys, totaling approximately $200 to $500.

Once your furry friend is settled in, ongoing expenses come into play. The most significant ongoing expense for most dog owners is food, which can range from $20 to $60 per month, depending on the size and dietary needs of your dog. Grooming costs, including grooming supplies and occasional professional grooming sessions, can add another $200 to $500 annually.

Veterinary care is another essential expense to consider. Routine check-ups, vaccinations, and preventative medications can cost around $200 to $400 per year, while unexpected medical emergencies can quickly escalate into thousands of dollars in vet bills.

To manage these costs effectively, start by creating a dedicated budget for your dog's expenses. Research and compare prices for supplies, food, and veterinary services to find the best value without sacrificing quality. Consider setting aside a portion of your monthly income into a pet emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses. Finally, prioritize your dog's needs while making financial decisions to ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve without compromising your financial stability.
