| | "My cats inspire me daily. They inspire me to get a dog." - Greg Curtis | | Happy Friday! Here's the scoop: | | Did You Know...? Did humans domesticate dogs or horses first? (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Colorado Football Player Saves Strays on His Hike Colorado football player Jaylen Ellis loves to hike whenever he wants to clear his mind. It's a healthy ritual that allows him to get fresh air and exercise. Imagine his surprise when he encountered a dog and kitten one day while on his usual route. No one was around, so he couldn't leave them. Little did he know, that hike would change his life. The dog's fur was in terrible condition, and the kitten was very young. He brought the animals into his home until he could contact the local humane society. He gave them both baths and comfortable spots to rest. Once he got in touch with the humane society, they were able to check for microchips and reach out to the animals' owners, but no one ever responded. The kitten was placed into foster care, but Ellis had fallen in love with the dog and adopted her. He named her Angel and has absolutely loved being a dog dad. Ellis has a hectic schedule with football practice and meetings, but he makes time each day to hang out with Angel. She dances with him when they listen to music and loves taking walks and hikes. Sounds like these two are a match made in heaven—maybe that's how he came up with her name! | | Image courtesy of I Heart Dogs | | Breed Information about the Lhasa Apso If you are searching for a breed that is on the smaller side, funny, and eager to please, the Lhasa Apso might be right for you. Lhasa Apsos were first introduced over 2,500 years ago in Tibet. They were watchdogs in Buddhist monasteries and other important buildings throughout the Himalayan region. The breed is named after the sacred city of Lhasa. It wasn't until the 20th century that the breed became more popular in the Western world. When fully grown, the breed stands about 10 inches tall and weighs between 12 and 18 pounds. They have a long, dense, and straight coat with a part down the middle. The most common colors are black, tan, cream, red, and white, but sometimes they can even be gray or silver. Their noses are black and brown with a longer beard underneath. The grooming requirements for the breed are high maintenance and their coats can easily get tangled without regular brushings and baths. Now, let's talk about the Lhasa Apsos' famous personality. These dogs are incredibly smart, but they are also extremely independent, so they can be tricky to train. The puppies take around three years to mature fully, so it's important to give them ways to channel their puppy energy. Loyalty is really where they shine. This dog naturally protects, so they will always have your back. This makes them great therapy dogs. If you are searching for a smaller breed of dog that will fiercely protect its owners and you don't mind grooming routines, the Lhasa Apso might be the perfect breed for you. | | Image courtesy of Dog's Best Life | | This Skincare Is Good For And For Animals! It's perfect for a little playtime or snuggling when you're not home. These hearts may remind you of the trendy fleece tie blankets that have been popular in the crafty community for a while now. No-Sew Valentine's Day Toy You'll need: A half yard of micro-fleece in whatever color you'd like, fabric scissors, a pen or fine-tip marker, and a heart stencil (optional—you can freehand this as well). - Stack two layers of fleece on top of each other and draw a heart shape (or trace the stencil).
- Cut out around the line with about two inches of extra fabric outside the line so you can make the knots.
- Cut two slits on the edge of the heart with the width of your finger between them. Double knot the bottom and top fabric together. Repeat this step until you have the majority of the heart tied.
- With a remaining hole that isn't tied yet, fill it with extra fleece as the stuffing.
- Finish cutting and tying until the heart is completely sealed.
- Trim the edges to make them all about the same length, and you're all set!
