(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Shelter Celebrates Its First Empty Night in Almost 50 Years The Adams County SPCA is used to the sounds of dogs and cats filling their facility each night as they work to find lost pets' owners and place rescue animals in homes. During this year's holiday season, they celebrated silence after what they called a "true miracle." Just two weeks before Christmas, the kennel was full. The employees worked hard to get animals placed and process adoptions. This requires the staff to get all animals spayed and neutered, vaccinated, and tested for illnesses. Between November 1 and Christmas, the Adams County SPCA adopted 94 animals and returned 26 strays to their owners, and not a single one returned to the shelter. Each kennel was empty by Christmastime, and the staff celebrated this huge milestone for the first time in 47 years! You can see the celebration in the photo of the staff with all the kennel doors open. But they didn't just sit back and relax—they all dove in to help other Pennslyvania shelters get closer to the same goal. Additionally, many pet owners who adopted from this establishment joined in on the Facebook comments to express their gratitude. | | Simple and Delicious Homemade Fruit Dog Treats As pet owners, we always want the best for our furry companions, including providing them with healthy and tasty treats. Homemade dog treats are a fantastic way to ensure you know exactly what goes into your pup's snacks, avoiding any unnecessary additives or preservatives. In this article, we'll share a minimal ingredient recipe for homemade fruit dog treats that are sure to have your canine companion begging for more. Ingredients: - 2 ripe bananas
- 1 cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce
- 1 1/2 cups of oat flour (you can make your own by blending oats until they reach a flour-like consistency)
- Optional: a tablespoon of honey for extra sweetness (avoid if your dog is diabetic or if you prefer to limit sugar)
Instructions: -
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. -
In a mixing bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. If your bananas are very ripe, this should be easy to do with a fork. -
Add the blueberries and unsweetened applesauce to the mashed bananas and mix well. The applesauce helps bind the ingredients together and adds natural sweetness without the need for added sugar. -
Gradually stir in the oat flour, mixing until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a little more oat flour until it reaches a workable consistency. -
Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. You can use a rolling pin to make this easier. -
Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the dough. You can use any shape you like, but dog bone shapes or small circles work well for dog treats. -
Place the cut-out shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each treat. -
Optional: If you'd like, you can brush the treats with a little honey for added sweetness before baking. -
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the treats are firm and golden brown around the edges. -
Once baked, remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your furry friend. Storage: These homemade fruit dog treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If you'd like them to last longer, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or freeze them for up to three months. With just a few simple ingredients, you can whip up a batch of delicious homemade fruit dog treats that are sure to delight your pup. Not only are these treats tasty, but they're also packed with nutrients from the fresh fruit and oats. So why not give them a try?
