| | Did You Know...? True or False: Japan has seven dog breeds designated as national monuments. (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Dogs in Japan are Participating in an Important Rite of Passage In Japan, there is a rite called Seven-Five-Three, where parents dress their children in kimonos and bring them to a Shinto shrine for a special ceremony. With the country's birthrate declining over the last seven years, the ritual is starting to look a bit different. There has been a recent shift, with pet owners bringing their dogs to these rituals instead. The pet parents can pray for the health and happiness of their animals. Dogs are led up the steps to the Inuneko Jinja (the Dog-Cat Shrine) to receive a blessing from a Shinto priest. Their owners dress their dogs in kimonos for the special event. This year, they received about 120 dogs at the shrine for this blessing. It is for children and pets who are three, five, and seven years old. We think it's great that these families have a place to get their canine family members blessed. As an added bonus, the dogs look wonderful in their kimonos! | | Image courtesy of Reuters | | Stop Using This Word When Training Your Dog Training a dog requires patience and consistency. It's no easy feat, but it's important for your and your dog's safety. Trainers all over the country work with families and dog owners daily to give them tips and tricks on the best ways to get their dog to listen and follow commands. So, when many trainers were asked for their advice, many of them asked that dog owners stop using the word "OK" when training their dogs. OK is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and exclamation. It's often used as a release word for dogs that are staying in place. However, it's so common in our daily conversations that it can be confusing for a dog. Trainers see setbacks in dogs when they are confused. You might accidentally say that in a sentence, and the dog might behave in a certain way that contradicts what you thought you told them, and then everyone is confused and frustrated. Instead of "OK," dog owners can use "release" or "break," which are far less common in our speech. Another confusing situation for dogs is "leave it." People say that when they want their dog to drop something, but then give them the item just a few minutes later. That command should be reserved for things that the dog should never have. If you are playing with a toy or a treat, try "wait" or "not yet" so they recognize a difference. | | Image courtesy of PureWow | | Make 2024 A Healthy Year For Your Pup In 2024, if you're looking to start the year on a healthy note for your pup, good nutrition is key. Elvis Presley loved peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwiches. Now, it's become an ice cream flavor, a menu item at some diners, and even a way to treat your pups. Note: This recipe uses bacon, which doesn't always sit well with a dog's stomach. If you've never let them have some bacon, you can swap this ingredient with something else.
