| | "Dogs never bite me. Just humans." - Marilyn Monroe | | Happy Thursday! Here's the scoop: | | Did You Know...? Who has lived with humans longer - dogs or cats? (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | | | Can You Teach Your Dog to Talk? Many dog owners have their own idea of what their dog's voice would sound like if they could speak, but what if you could actually train your dog to use words? Some videos are circulating on TikTok and Instagram where dog owners use word buttons to train their dogs to "talk." Typically, dogs communicate with us through body language and their own vocalizations. They can show you that they need to go outside or paw at their treat cabinet when they want a snack. But these word buttons can take that to the next level with some training and positive reinforcement. Steps to teach your dog to use word buttons: - Gather the supplies. You'll need a set of recordable buttons, lots of training treats, and a mat to help keep the buttons in one place.
- Choose your words. Use a few words that your dog already knows and record the word on the buttons. You'll teach them one button at a time, so starting with something familiar is good.
- Build an association between the button and a tasty treat. Push the button and immediately give your dog a treat. This helps the dog realize that the button and the sound mean good things.
- Build your dog's targeting skills. Your dog will need to learn how to push the button. You can put the button in your hand and ask your pup to shake. Make sure to immediately give them a treat so they associate the two things together.
- Pair the button with an event. Once they know to push the button, you must teach them what it means. For example, use the "outside" button and have the dog push it, and then immediately open the door and give your dog a treat when they go outside.
- Discriminate between buttons. Only reinforce the correct behavior after the button push so your dog learns what each one means.
- Use the buttons throughout the day. You can start removing the treats as reinforcement once they use the buttons more frequently. Try at different times per day to provide your pup with mental stimulation.
These word buttons haven't been studied much by scientists yet, but it is a great dog training exercise. You can spend time bonding with your pup, and at the same time practice this fun trick. Just make sure to keep an eye on your dog's body language to ensure they are not stressed or overwhelmed by the activity. Otherwise, happy learning! | | Image courtesy of Daily Paws | | What to Know About Mysterious Respiratory Dog Illness In early December, the news started mentioning a mysterious respiratory illness in dogs. The symptoms include fever, cough, and lethargy. Vets have named it Atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, or aCIRDC. There isn't much known about its origins, but it's seen a rise in the last few months and is being spotted in multiple states now. Some states report symptoms lasting for weeks in dogs, and unfortunately some dogs who acquire the illness are not responding to treatments. It can be especially dangerous for dogs with preexisting chronic respiratory illnesses because it can lead to pneumonia. If your dog has a lingering cough, loss of appetite, or shows signs of weakness, they should see the vet as soon as possible. Keeping your dog hydrated is also essential. Many pet owners are a little scared and wondering what to do and how to protect their dogs. Veterinarians advise dog owners to ensure that their dogs are up to date with their vaccinations. It might be a good idea to skip the dog park and keep your pup away from communal water bowls in public places. Reduce your dog's contact with large groups of unfamiliar dogs. If your dog feels under the weather, keep them at home and out of doggy daycare or a boarding facility. As always, contact your vet if you have any concerns. | | Image courtesy of Dogington Post | | How Dogs Boost Your Mood Having a furry friend isn't just about wagging tails and wet noses; it's also a powerful mood booster. Dogs, with their unconditional love and boundless energy, have a remarkable ability to lift our spirits and enhance our overall well-being. One of the key contributors to this mood-boosting effect is the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone." Interactions with our canine companions trigger the release of this hormone, promoting feelings of love, trust, and bonding. The simple act of petting or playing with your dog can lead to a surge in oxytocin levels, creating a sense of calm and happiness. Moreover, dogs are excellent companions that offer emotional support and alleviate feelings of loneliness. Their joyful demeanor and constant companionship provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be particularly beneficial for those experiencing stress or anxiety. The physical activity involved in caring for a dog, such as walking or playing fetch, contributes to increased endorphin levels, the body's natural mood lifters. Regular exercise not only benefits the dog's health but also enhances the owner's physical and mental well-being. In essence, the positive impact of having a dog extends beyond the realm of a pet-owner relationship; it becomes a source of joy, comfort, and emotional resilience, making every day brighter and more fulfilling. | | How To Boost Your Mood If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone.
