When Do Puppies Start Barking?
Puppies are different from human babies in many ways, but one of the main ones is sounds. Babies cry almost instantly after they are born, but puppies don't start barking until they are seven or eight weeks old. Newborn pups are deaf, blind, and mostly silent. During the first three to four weeks, they develop their senses and start to make small noises, like whimpers and whines.

Barking is usually picked up by listening to other dogs and mimicking what they hear. It's used for dogs when they are stressed, excited, bored, scared, or looking for attention. Studies show that it was something that came with the domestication of dogs and wasn't likely used by wild dogs.

It's important to build good habits early around barking. Ignoring excessive barking in a young dog can help, but most importantly, you should never reward a dog for demand barking. And if you have a dog that doesn't bark too much, there's no need to worry. You can always talk to your vet if you have a concern.

Dog Breeds With the Most Unique Bark Sounds
Barking is one of the most common ways that dogs communicate, but not all bark sounds the same. Some breeds have unique barks that can be easily picked out of a pack or even almost impossible to hear at all.
  1. Basenji - The breed is known as the "barkless dog" because of the sound they make it more like a yodel. They have an unusually shaped larynx. Historically, they wanted quieter dogs for hunting in Central Asia, so the dogs evolved to be quiet.
  2. Basset Hound - These hounds have a deep, throaty bark that lasts longer than standard barking sounds. It helps alert hunters to their location.
  3. Siberian Husky - Wolf-like howls come from these breeds instead of barks. They use long, lyrical sounds to communicate with other dogs and humans. This breed is related to wolves, so it stems from their lineage.
  4. Beagle - As another hunting breed, these dogs make a sound that is described as a bay, and it's helpful when hunting in a pack with other dogs.
  5. Chihuahua - These tiny dogs have a powerful, surprisingly loud bark. They have a nervous nature, so their sharp, high-pitched barks come when they alert others to something.
  6. German Shepherd - This dog has a deep, powerful bark used when guarding and protecting something or someone. They also have a wide range of sounds to help communicate with their handlers.
  7. Dachshund - Another tiny breed with a large bark, these dogs were originally bred for hunting badgers. Their barks needed to be loud enough to be heard underground to alert others to potential threats.
  8. Scottish Terrier - These terriers are fearless and confident. The dogs are territorial and have a sharp and raspy bark to alert people of any strangers or other animals.
  9. Bloodhound - These breeds are scent hounds with a distinct bark that alerts handlers to a scent trail. It's a long, drawn-out bark.
  10. Shetland Sheepdog - While herding livestock, this breed uses its high-pitched bark almost continuously to direct the pack and warn them of potential dangers.
Each breed uses its special voice to communicate and get out some energy. Have you heard of any of these breeds? Listen for them next time you're at the dog park, and see if you can pick out any unique barks.
