πŸ• Research studies about foster care

"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring—it was peace."
-Milan Kundera

Happy Wednesday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?
True or False: There are around 2,200 animal shelters in the United States.

Research Helps Find Proven Method to Boost Adoptions
Researchers at Virginia Tech and Arizona State University have been working on ways to help more shelter dogs get adopted. They have found that implementing fostering programs, even short-term, vastly improves dog adoptions.

Dogs living in shelters significantly reduce stress and other physiological measures by spending time with people. Researchers looked at the effects of outings of just a few hours and overnight stays. These brief outings improved a dog's likelihood of adoption. It increased it by five times if they got a few hours out of the shelter. Once dogs were able to stay in a home for at least a night or two, the likelihood that they would be adopted increased by 14 times!

These findings are exciting. It helps make the case for the incredible foster-based organizations, like many of the features we shared throughout January. If you've ever considered fostering or volunteering to take dogs out on walks or adventures from the shelter, let this be your sign. Increase the chance that these dogs get adopted by spending some time showering them with love and attention—it's science.

Buttermilk Bones for Your Pup
Probiotic treats are not only great for your dog's gut, but can also be incredibly enjoyable and tasty for the pup. These frozen treats can be poured into a silicone mold like a bone, and they make great snacks.

Buttermilk Bone Treats
You'll need: One cup of buttermilk, one mashed banana, a half cup of thinly chopped raw cabbage, and one tablespoon of Manuka honey for dressing.
  1. Place all the ingredients into a blender and mix until smooth and well blended.
  2. Put the molds on a baking tray. This will help you move them to the freezer without spilling.
  3. Pour the mixture into the molds. Drizzle the honey over the top.
  4. Freeze for two to three hours until solid.
  5. Serve frozen to your dog.

Do Dogs Dream?
Do dogs dream? It's a question that has intrigued pet owners and animal enthusiasts alike. While we can't exactly ask our furry friends about their nocturnal adventures, scientific evidence suggests that dogs do, indeed, experience dreams.

Research indicates that dogs share similarities with humans in the sleep cycle, particularly during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage. This is the phase associated with vivid dreaming in humans. Studies using electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings have shown that dogs also enter REM sleep, characterized by increased brain activity and twitching of the limbs, which is indicative of dreaming.

Observing a sleeping dog, you might notice subtle movements like twitching paws, facial expressions, or even the occasional soft bark. These behaviors align with the idea that dogs are engaged in dream-like experiences during REM sleep.

It's essential to recognize that the content of a dog's dreams remains a mystery. While humans can describe their dreams, dogs lack the ability to communicate their subconscious adventures. Nevertheless, the evidence suggests that our canine companions likely embark on their own dreamland journeys, filled with chasing squirrels, playing fetch, or enjoying moments with their beloved humans. So, the next time you catch your pup in the midst of a dream, rest assured that they're likely relishing their own imaginary escapades.

Not Quite the Guard Dogs They Expected
One dog owner has two dogs that they thought would protect and care for the house. Imagine their surprise when they realized what their dogs were doing in the garage. It definitely wouldn't fall under the category of "caring for the house." However it doesn't matter to us, because it's fantastic entertainment! Someone should give these dogs a spot on the Tonight Show to show off their hilarious talents.
Supplements To Keep Your Pup Feeling Good
Ensuring your dog's well-being involves more than just a balanced diet and regular exercise; sometimes, supplements can play a crucial role in supporting their health. Consider the following healthy supplements for your canine companion:
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Derived from fish oil, these essential fatty acids promote a shiny coat, support joint health, and may aid cognitive function.

  • Probiotics: Beneficial bacteria that contribute to a healthy digestive system, improving nutrient absorption and supporting the immune system. Particularly beneficial for dogs with sensitive stomachs or those undergoing antibiotic treatments.

  • Glucosamine and Chondroitin: Joint supplements that can be beneficial, especially for older dogs or those prone to joint issues. These compounds support joint health and can alleviate symptoms of arthritis or hip dysplasia.

  • Antioxidants (Vitamins C and E): Combat oxidative stress, promoting a strong immune system and overall well-being.

  • Multivitamins: Tailored to your dog's specific needs, these supplements can address potential nutritional gaps in their diet.

Before introducing any supplements, it's crucial to consult with your veterinarian. They can provide guidance on appropriate dosages and ensure that the chosen supplements complement your dog's individual health requirements. With the right supplements, you can contribute to your furry friend's longevity and enhance their overall quality of life.
