πŸ• The number of dogs on planes continues rising

"You get so much in return when you adopt a pet, and I'm going to preach for adoption for the rest of my life. Every second chance for these animals starts with someone like you."
- Dave Bautista

Happy Tuesday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know...?
What percentage of American pets board a plane each year?

Grandparents Make Great Dog Sitters
Larry is the proud grandfather of Chance, a four-year-old German Shepherd. His daughter, Meghan, decided to leave the dog with Larry when she took a trip to New York. Little did she know, he would send her the funniest updates. She posted all the texts to Twitter, and they've been retweeted more than 50,000 times.

Things started with Chance texting, "Grandpa wants to know what kind of take-out I can have. We are starving." She received another reading, "Hate to keep bothering you, Mom, but we need to hang out with gramps more." Each text from the dog came with a photo of the duo as they went about their day.

Eventually, Chance sent this update," Hi mom, it's me again. We had a picnic and are going to the nail salon now. Gramps said if I'm good I can have ice cream. What kind do I like again?" It was clear that Larry and Chance were having a blast together and keeping Meghan updated on all their antics. That sets the bar high for dog sitters.

Airlines are Experiencing a Big Influx of Animals Onboard
Delta Airlines reports that approximately 500,000 pets travel onboard each year, and that number does not include service animals. This trend has increased after the pandemic. With so many people adopting pets and spending extended periods of time with them, they are more likely to want to bring them alone on vacations and trips now.

In 2021, the Federal Aviation Association tightened the rules for service animals to help with the amount of strange requests they were getting. There are no emotional support peacocks or pigs allowed onboard today, but there are still plenty of service dogs flying with their humans.

If you don't have a service animal, you can still bring one along. You just have to contact the airline in advance and make sure they have space. Flights limit the number of pets onboard, so you must ensure your pet has a spot. The rules state that animals need to remain in their carrier under your seat, like luggage. This is pretty easy for small dogs, but large dogs will not have that option.

When planning a vacation, work with your preferred airline to find out exactly what their rules are. Some new airlines offer specials for pet owners, but those are still pretty expensive compared to the popular airlines. But if you absolutely must bring your Great Dane onboard, check out the semi-private options from K9 Jets or NetJet. And if it doesn't work out, see if you can find a dog sitter like Larry, who will send you updates on your pet's activities while you're gone.

The Science Behind Collagen Treats for Dogs
Collagen treats for dogs have surged in popularity, with numerous claims about their benefits flooding the market. However, amidst the marketing hype, it's crucial to discern the scientific facts behind these products.

Firstly, collagen is a protein abundant in connective tissues, promoting skin, joint, and bone health in dogs, much like in humans. Collagen treats often tout benefits like improved joint mobility and skin health. While collagen supplementation can indeed support these areas, not all treats deliver as promised.

The efficacy of collagen treats depends on various factors, including the source and quality of collagen used, as well as the formulation and dosage. Research supporting the benefits of collagen for dogs is still emerging, and while some studies show promising results, more robust clinical trials are needed.

Moreover, it's essential to consider collagen treats as part of a balanced diet rather than a cure-all solution. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, and proper veterinary care remain paramount for a dog's overall well-being.

In conclusion, while collagen treats may offer certain health benefits for dogs, consumers should approach them with a critical eye, looking for products backed by reputable research and considering them as supplements rather than substitutes for proper care.

Dog Went in Search of a Cold Beverage
It's always 5:00 somewhere, right? Bear is a 16-year-old Shih Tzu who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. One night, he went missing from his owner's backyard. Jenny Hazarad was outside with her dogs when she realized Bear had gone missing. She was instantly in tears because he is old and has a heart condition.

Shortly after he disappeared and their search party began, she received a text informing her that her dog was at Finks. It's a local watering hole. The text included a photo of Bear having the time of his life at the bar. A group was walking to Finks and spotted the pup on their way, so they brought him to the warm spot to get in touch with his owners.

Maybe Bear just wanted to cut loose for a few minutes. Hopefully, he had a good time and will at least inform his humans when he needs adventure in the future.
