A Book Recommendation for Dog Lovers
Taylor Wolfe is a writer and comedian living in the Pacific Northwest. Her first book, Birdie and Harlow: Life, Loss, and Loving My Dog So Much I Didn't Want Kids, was released last fall. It is a beautiful story about her relationship with her dog Harlow and how that impacted her experience of becoming a mom to Birdie about a decade later. Thanks to her comedy chops, Taylor has a way of telling the story that will make you laugh and cry on the same page.

Harlow was a Vizsla puppy that Taylor bought as a surprise anniversary present for her then-boyfriend (now husband.) She had no idea how much this dog would impact her life, and they formed quite a codependent bond. Harlow was by Taylor's side as she navigated her twenties, including a move to Chicago, marriage, and, eventually, the decision to add a baby to the mix. She talks about their neighborhood walks and Harlow's obsession with shopping at Target.

Taylor's relationship with her dog was special and it comes out in every chapter of this book. We feel like we got the chance to know Harlow in this story. She brings his personality alive in a way that makes you feel like you've met him. And when you get to the end, you'll likely want to spend a little extra snuggle time with your pup.
Are Vizslas the Right Dog for Your Family?
If you're searching for an energetic dog that can keep up with a very active family, Vizslas might be the perfect breed. Maybe you've read the book above and dreamed of having your own dog like Harlow.

This red-coated dog was bred for long days in the field. The athletic dog has been the pride of Hungarian sportsmen for years, but it is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as a family pet.

Vizslas are excellent hunting companions. They typically form tight bonds with their owners. It's important to keep this breed active. Whether you like running, biking, or hiking, you'll have a great companion for these activities. The breed is incredibly smart, so work on commands and training early to take advantage of their brains.

Grooming needs are minimal since the dog's hair is short, and has no undercoat. However, they shed a bit and will need occasional baths, especially after outside playtime in the dirt or mud. With floppy ears, it's important to check them often for dirt, wax build-up, and any signs of irritation. Vizslas are good eaters, but their caloric needs vary based on their exercise and activity levels.

Vizslas are fantastic dogs. If you have a large outdoor space for playtime or can provide them with around 30 minutes of exercise per day, you might just be the perfect match for these beautiful animals.
Nutrition For Stress Relief In Your Pup
Nutrition plays a crucial role in alleviating stress in dogs, influencing their overall well-being and behavior. Incorporating the right foods into your dog's diet can mitigate stress levels and promote a sense of calm. Prioritize high-quality, balanced diets rich in essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients support cognitive function and emotional stability, crucial for managing stress.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil or flaxseed, possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce anxiety and promote brain health in dogs. Also, vitamins like B-complex vitamins and vitamin C support the nervous system and strengthen the body's response to stressors.

Certain ingredients can exacerbate stress in dogs and should be avoided. High levels of refined sugars, found in some commercial treats and foods, can lead to energy spikes and crashes, contributing to anxiety. Similarly, foods containing excessive preservatives, artificial flavors, and colors may trigger allergic reactions or digestive issues, further adding to a dog's stress burden.

Meet Vinny and Gunny
Taylor Wolfe was lucky enough to love Harlow for his whole life, and she knew she would likely add another Viszla to the family. When they brought home Gunny, he was an older boy who needed a good, secure home. He bonded wonderfully with the family. Soon enough, they added another Vizsla puppy, Vinny.

We can't get enough of their fun videos on Taylor's Instagram, and we are hoping for a second book featuring these two in the future.

How Your Mood Affects Your Dog
The bond between humans and dogs is deeply rooted in mutual understanding and emotional connection. Surprisingly, this relationship isn't a one-way street—research suggests that our moods significantly influence those of our canine companions.

Dogs are remarkably attuned to human emotions, capable of discerning subtle changes in our facial expressions, body language, and even scent. When we're feeling stressed, anxious, or upset, dogs often pick up on these cues, mirroring our emotional state. When we're happy and relaxed, they're more likely to exhibit behaviors associated with contentment, such as wagging their tails and seeking affection.

Studies have shown that positive interactions with humans can elevate dogs' levels of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," promoting feelings of trust and bonding. Conversely, negative emotions can lead to increased cortisol levels, indicating stress and discomfort in dogs.

By staying calm and positive, we can create a supportive environment that fosters emotional well-being for both ourselves and our beloved dogs.
