Dog Helps Locate an Escaped Convict
On July 7, a prisoner named Michael Burham escaped from the Warren County Prison in Pennsylvania, but thanks to a local dog, he was found and sent back behind bars. Tucker is a six-year-old chocolate lab who lives in the area. Ron and Cindy Ecklund are Tucker's owners.

They heard Tucker barking out in their wooded backyard one day, however he normally returns on command. They went to see what could be causing him to make all this noise and discovered Burham hiding out on their property. A quick call to 9-1-1 got police on site to take him back into custody.

Tucker and the Ecklunds received a cash reward for helping locate the fugitive. They made sure to treat Tucker to a bucket of new toys and so many treats.

Do(g)-It-Yourself Colorful Dog Leash
Dog owners use a leash daily, so why not make it unique? Grab a color of dye that goes great with your dog to upgrade your walk accessories with this project

You'll need: Cotton rope, waxed cord, fabric dye, snap hook, rope clamps, E6000 glue, hammer, bucket, mixing bowls, and scissors.
  1. Soak the rope and half of the cord in a bowl of water.
  2. Mix ½ of the packet of dye into a cup of hot water until dissolved.
  3. Add dye mixture to a bucket of cold water and stir.
  4. Place half the waxed cord and all but two feet of rope into the dye bath, and then immediately pull out another foot of the lightly dyed rope and hang it over the side.
  5. After five to ten minutes, pull out one more foot of rope. Continue every few minutes.
  6. Leave the last two feet of rope in the bucket for an additional hour to let it turn the darkest color.
  7. Let the rope dry overnight on a piece of cardboard.
  8. Loop one end of the rope through the snap hook and secure it with a rope clamp. Trim off any excess frayed rope pieces with scissors. Repeat on the other end, but make the loop big enough to be a handle.
  9. Tie the waxed chord at the top of one clamp and then draw a line of glue along either side of the clamp. Wrap the cord around the rope to cover up the entire clamp and then secure it with a knot. Repeat on the other end using the dyed cord to match. Let the glue dry for an hour.

Is a Raw Diet the Right Choice for Your Dog?
Canine diets can be complicated, and so much information is available online right now for pet owners. The best thing to do is talk to your vet about your options to ensure your dog gets a well-balanced diet. If you are considering a raw diet, there are a few things you should take into consideration.

Reasons not to feed your dog a raw diet:
  • It costs more than a dry food diet.
  • Homemade raw dog food might not be nutritionally balanced.
  • It is challenging if you travel a lot.
  • A lot of storage space is required in your freezer and refrigerator.
  • Dogs get sick from different foods, especially when switching quickly between foods.
  • Raw food will require more cleanup.
  • Bones in raw food might crack a dog's tooth.
  • There is a slight chance of intestinal blockage due to bones.
  • The chance of a dog choking on a raw bone is low, but it's there.
  • Many vets need to be educated on raw diets. You can always get a second opinion or seek out a vet who knows more about these diets.
