| | 9 Beloved Dog Characters We Adore | We're all suckers for dogs, aren't we? As if having them in our lives wasn't enough, they also make their mark all over our favorite stories. We never have to be without a dog—whether real or fictional! The dog characters we've grown to love mirror so much of what dogs mean to us in real life. Let's take a look at 9 iconic dog characters that we all adore, and are impossible to forget. | | Little Toto was more than just a sidekick; he played just as big a role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Toto is a black terrier that symbolizes bravery and loyalty in a small package. I mean, he stuck by Dorothy's side through a tornado, talking scarecrows, a tinman, and a cowardly lion. Honestly, I'm not sure if my dog would stick around for all of that! The beloved dog who played Toto, named Terry, actually had quite a story of her own—from carpet-wetter to movie star! | | I love that Because of Winn-Dixie shines a positive spotlight on strays, rescue dogs, mutts – all pups of that nature. Winn-Dixie is more than just a dog; he's a symbol of hope. The story follows Opal, a girl who feels lonely and abandoned by her mother. When she rescues Winn-Dixie as an unruly stray from a supermarket, he helps her break out of her shell and forge new friendships in her community. Through Winn-Dixie's gentle and loving nature, Opal learns to open her heart to others, see the potential for friendship in everyone, and embrace new experiences. We can learn so much from dogs, and Winn-Dixie's role illustrates that beautifully. It's such a heartwarming story; no wonder Winn-Dixie has already clung to people's hearts as a newer character. | | I must say… Clifford is my favorite on this list. Clifford the Big Red Dog is memorable not just for his gigantic size but also for his loving and kind spirit. Clifford's world started as a series of books and grew into a popular TV show and even a movie. He stands 25 feet tall and is best pals with his 8-year-old owner, Emily Elizabeth. Together, they explore Birdwell Island and learn valuable life lessons about friendship, responsibility, and kindness—all through imaginative play and helping their neighbors. After getting to know the fictional Clifford, who wouldn't wish for a giant, red dog to carry them everywhere? | | Snoopy is iconic. A strong case can be made that he's the most well-known dog in the world. Snoopy made his first appearance in 1950, just two days after the debut of the Peanuts comic strip. He's charming, funny, imaginative, and of course, a loyal friend to his good old pal, Charlie Brown. Who could forget Snoopy's alter egos, including the sophisticated World's Greatest Writer, the daring Flying Ace, and the cool Joe Cool! His cutest signature move has to be his "happy dance," with his head thrown back, paws tapping, and arms waving. Also, did you know Snoopy is a beagle? It makes sense with those long, floppy ears. | Here's a fun fact: Snoopy was inspired by a black-and-white pointer named Spike that Schulz owned as a child, and the name "Snoopy" was suggested by Schulz's mother for their next dog. | | If any of you have put yourself through The Call of the Wild and needed tissues within reach, then you surely remember Buck. Buck is a big boy who is kidnapped from his family home in California, taken to the wild Yukon, and forced to become a sled dog. To save you the heartbreak of worrying about Buck's fate, if you haven't read the novel or seen the movie, he does end up where he belongs in the end. But wow, I don't think I could reread (or rewatch) the abuse and sadness Buck experiences in this story. | Buck is a classic example of how resilient dogs are. His character is powerful and unforgettable, and the book has been published in multiple languages and adapted into several movies. What makes Buck even more beloved is that he was based on a real dog that author Jack London met while adventuring in the Yukon. This real-life dog inspired London to combine his own experiences with his imagination to create the amazing main character, Buck. | | Scooby Dooby-Doo! This list wouldn't be complete without Scooby—after all, we even have snacks made in his honor! Who remembers those Dunkaroos with the sugary white frosting dip with sprinkles? Talk about nostalgia! Scooby the Great Dane is famous for his insatiable appetite and his inseparable friendship with Shaggy. Scooby has truly been such an influential character because, despite his "Rikes!" and easily spooked nature, he always finds a way to put on a brave face. | | Lassie is such a classic. I have to admit, I've never read the novel or watched the series, but I've heard so much about her (thanks, Mom!). Lassie is a smart, fearless, and faithful collie who repeatedly saves little Timmy and alerts her family to danger week after week. Her loyalty and role in the family inspired people of all ages to see dogs as true family members and appreciate the significant role they can play. It's almost impossible not to think of Lassie whenever a beautiful, full-haired collie walks by. No wonder Lassie captivated millions to read her story and watch her show—her commitment to helping is amazing! | | Of course, a tiny Jack Russell Terrier who daydreams about being the hero in classic literature stories is going to capture people's hearts. His one brown ear and other spotted ear are just precious, and joining him on old-time adventures is fun for everyone. Wishbone brought classic literature to life for kids and adults alike. Whether he was imagining himself as Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, or Odysseus, Wishbone gave a new take on these tales and made them pretty exciting (a dog in costumes – need I say more?). His cleverness and imagination made him a hero in more ways than the ones he imagined! | | No matter the time, place, or year, dogs always have a special place in the family—even in the future with the Jetsons. Astro is lovable, affectionate, and embodies everything a dog stands for. Astro was once the pet of a millionaire, but as we know, money didn't bring him happiness. He despised that kind of lifestyle and longed for a family. He eventually found his way to the Jetsons, where he found everything he was looking for. Astro's story serves as a good reminder that dogs could have all the material things in the world, but they mean nothing if they don't have love, trust, and connection to share with their people. | Now, we're curious: who are your favorite dog characters? Are they on this list? Let us know! |

| | | The Best Dog-Themed Books for a Feel-Good Reading Session | There's nothing like curling up with a good book to escape the world, especially when it involves dogs (we can't get enough of them, can we?). For dog lovers, the perfect story needs a balance of heartwarming moments and uplifting stories without stumbling into heavy or traumatic territory (I'm talking about you, Where the Red Fern Grows). We've put together 9 dog-themed books perfect for a feel-good reading session! | Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home by Mikael Lindnord | Arthur is the heartwarming true story of a stray dog and an extreme athlete who found each other in the unlikeliest of places. While racing 435 miles through the jungles and mountains of South America, Mikael Lindnord found himself sharing a meatball with a scruffy, yet calm, mud-battered dog. That was the start of an unbreakable bond, which multiplied when Arthur followed the team of adventure racers until the finish, through all types of terrain – even swimming – and with previous injuries. It's an uplifting story that showcases the amazing bond that can form between humans and dogs while also raising awareness about the plight of homeless dogs everywhere. | A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron | A Dog's Purpose is a brilliant, heartwarming book that takes us through the different lives of a dog that continues to be reincarnated. It begins with Toby, a stray who ends up in a shelter and follows his reincarnation as Bailey, a Golden Retriever who forms a classic bond with a young boy named Ethan. The journey continues as Bailey is reborn as a German Shepherd named Ellie, a search and rescue dog, and later as a mistreated black Lab named Buddy. Each life brings him closer to understanding his true purpose. This touching and often hilarious story is known to make you laugh, smile, and cry. Spending 19 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list is proof that it's one of the best dog books out there. | Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo | Because of Winn-Dixie is a heartwarming story about a young girl named Opal who adopts a scruffy stray dog she names Winn-Dixie. He has bald patches, reeks like a garbage can, and is in rough shape, but she fixes him up and he looks (and smells) brand new. Together, they navigate life's ups and downs in a small Southern town. But Winn-Dixie is more than just a dog; he helps Opal overcome her loneliness and form new friendships within her community. This feel-good story shines a positive light on strays and reminds us how much we can learn from dogs. Without Winn-Dixie, there wouldn't even be a story to tell! | Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale by Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff | When a Great Dane named Gracie enters Dan's life, everything changes for the better. This memoir is a heartfelt tribute to a dog whose gentle spirit transformed her owner's world, just as they transformed hers. Gracie's sweet personality and hysterical adventures come to life on the page, giving us both touching moments and laugh-out-loud humor. When her health began to decline, Dan's love for her led him to learn how to cook, and in just three days, he baked the cookies that saved her life and sparked the creation of Three Dog Bakery. This beautiful book is filled with courage, inspiration, humor, compassion, kindness, and joy—all the feel-good emotions! | The Best Doggone Bakery by Ellen Gilman | This book is the perfect light, fun-filled read about a woman who pursues her lifelong dream of opening a bakery just for dogs. We get to follow the optimistic Millie as she sets up her business, plays matchmaker, and advocates for rescue dogs, with a touch of romance for those who enjoy a bit of love in their stories (raising my hand!). Ellen Gilman's genuine care for dogs shines through, making the story heartwarming and engaging while addressing important topics like shelter dogs and puppy mills in a natural way. | Finding Gobi by Dion Leonard | Finding Gobi is the incredible true story of an ultra-marathon runner who forms an unbreakable bond with a scrappy little dog during a 155-mile race across the Gobi Desert. It's impossible not to fall in love with Gobi when you read about how she keeps pace with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across vast sand dunes, through yurt villages, and the black sands of the Gobi Desert – all for nearly 80 miles. Gobi wasn't kidding when she saw Dion and chose him as her person! Gobi and Dion's bond has become such an uplifting story that it's become available in children's editions as well! | The Dog Who Danced by Susan Wilson | This book tells the story of Justine, a woman who has experienced too much loss in her life, and her source of healing: her Sheltie, Mack. Suddenly, Mack goes missing and leaves Justine torn between rushing to her dying father's side and her quest to find her beloved dog. The story gets interesting as it's told from two perspectives: Justine's and Mack's (don't you just love when you can read a dog's thoughts?). Mack lives another part of his life with characters Ed and Alice, who are in need of their own healing after a devastating loss. This deep and heartwarming story is beyond a simple tale of a dog and its owner; it's about the ways dogs support us, the impact they have on our lives, and themes of family relationships and grief. | Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan | Oh, Marley & Me… this one captured the hearts of dog lovers everywhere. If you haven't read it, it's honestly a somewhat "normal" story about a dog and his owner, but one that irresistibly pulls you in. It tells the daily joys and challenges of dog ownership as well as the undeniable love they pour into our lives. It's equally hilarious and heartfelt – we get to meet Marley as a wiggly yellow puppy who grows into a ninety-seven-pound Labrador retriever full of life (that's a nice way of saying neurotic, uncontrollable, clumsy). Warning: it is an emotional read that will tug at your heartstrings, but it's necessary to perfectly capture the essence of what it means to be a dog owner—and there's nothing better than that. | You Lucky Dog by Julia London | You Lucky Dog is a warm and fuzzy rom-com guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Publicist Carly Kennedy and neuroscience professor Max Sheffington are both unlucky in life and find their worlds turned upside down when their Basset Hounds are accidentally switched. Carly ends up with spirited Hazel instead of her quiet Baxter, while Max is stuck with sad Baxter and missing lively Hazel. When Carly and Max meet to sort out the mix-up, it becomes a case of opposites attract – not just for them, but for their pups as well! With romance in the air, entertaining character development, and two adorable Basset Hounds to fall in love with, this book is not to be missed! | Which of these will be your next book to dive into? Do you have any dog-themed favorites to add to our list? We'd love to hear your recommendations! |
