| | ❝ | | The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too." | | Samuel Butler |

| | Did you know…/True or False? | What is the national dog of New Zealand? | (scroll to the bottom to find the answer!) | |

| | Friday is a New Zealand Legend | On the South Island of New Zealand, the Lake Tekapo region is known for its turquoise waters and dark skies at night. The Maori were the first to settle here, but in 1855, Scotsman James McKenzie reached the area. He brought along his dog, Friday. | McKenzie drove flocks of sheep from South Canterbury to Otago, but they were stolen. Eventually, authorities caught up with him, but they could not initially take control of the thousand sheep because of his dog, Friday. This Collie was incredibly smart and carried on herding the sheep on his own until eventually being captured. | The local farmers chipped in and commissioned a bronze memorial honoring working Collies, like Friday. The plaque reads, "Appreciate the value of the collie dog, without the help of which the grazing of this mountain country would be impossible." |

| | | Why Do Dogs Sometimes Shake While Sleeping? | You've probably caught your dog making some interesting movements while mid-snooze in their beds. They can sometimes shake, twitch, or move during their sleep, and there are a few reasons why these involuntary movements happen. Most of them are completely normal and healthy, but it's good to understand what to watch for as well. | Dreams - Dogs go through different sleep cycles, and during the REM stage, they can experience vivid dreams. This might cause some twitch or even howling while asleep. Illness - A few medical conditions can cause dogs to shake. They will likely shake while awake, too, if dealing with this. The shaking can be more violent, and they are easier to wake. Take them to a vet if you are worried about this. Cold Temps - Dogs shiver like humans when they are cold. They might be cold if they are tucked into a furry ball with their tail tucked. Get them a blanket and help them warm up. Seizures - These episodes last longer than regular shaking and will also cause their muscles to tense up and become stiff. The dog will be unconscious and unresponsive. You might also notice panting and drooling, and they will be confused afterward. If you suspect a seizure, get them to the vet as soon as possible.

| | | DIY Adventure Bed for Dogs | If you are planning some fun adventures with your pup this summer, you might be searching for a bed that provides comfort and easy packability. This DIY project allows you to choose your own style and make a bed that your pup will appreciate. | DIY Bed for Dogs | You'll need: A sleeping pad cut to size for your dog, anti-pill fleece, outdoor fabric, thread, and a zipper. | Cut your pieces of fleece and fabric to be slightly bigger than your sleeping pad. Sandwich the fabrics together and pin them along three sides. Leave a few inches of the long side un-sewn to add the zipper. Sew the pinned areas together. Slide in the sleeping pad to ensure that it fits. Install the zipper, attaching it to both sides of the fabric. Trim excess fabric from the inside seam.
| Now your bed is ready to go. You can easily remove the cover for cleaning, and when you're ready for adventure, you can fold it down and store it in your pack until you're set up at camp. Then, you get to inflate the sleeping pad, and your dog will have a comfortable spot to relax after a hike. |
