| | "Unicorn" Dog Finds a Home | The Wisconsin Humane Society has seen dogs of all breeds, shapes, and sizes, but Bella stood out from the others. She was the organization's first five-legged dog in its 145-year history. That's how she earned the title of unicorn. Her condition, dimelia, is extremely rare. It causes the duplication of bones. Bella had an extra femur, two fibulas, two tibias, and nine toes on her rear paw. At first, they thought someone had been playing around in Photoshop, but they soon realized that she was just special.
After consulting with a specialist and observing Bella for some time, they determined that surgery wasn't recommended since Bella used her leg comfortably and was eligible for adoption. Bella was adopted, and the day her new mom, Melissa, picked her up, she wore a sweatshirt that read "Adopt the Special Ones." We couldn't agree more. |

| | | How CBD Can Help Dogs | CBD is a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. With the passing of the US Farm Bill in 2018, it's much more accessible now. In recent years, there has been increasing evidence about the effects of CBD on treating various conditions in pets. Hemp pet products have been gaining popularity.
CBD interacts with multiple receptors in the brain and helps provide some therapeutic effects. It takes longer to process in dogs so the effects can last longer than in humans. Pet owners have been using CBD to help with pain, sleep, anxiety, and seizures.
Scientists have been conducting more studies on how well CBD can work for different maladies. Clinical trials have shown that CBD eases the symptoms of epilepsy in dogs. Another study followed dogs with severe allergies that cause excessive itching. With CBD, their scratching was reduced by 50%, which has helped with skin inflammatory responses.
There will be much more information in the future as more of these studies have time for observations and results, but the initial feedback shows that CBD can be a great option for many dogs dealing with discomfort. Talk to your vet about potentially adding CBD to your dog's routine. |

| | | DOTD - Meet Sophie & Abby | Everyone enjoys the water differently, and that's definitely true for Abby and Sophie. These two English Golden Retrievers are three years old and live in Texas. When their owner, Janis, asks if they want to "go see the fishies," they dash down the hill. | Sophie watches the fish from the pier while Abby jumps right in and swims with them. The outdoor temps don't matter much to these pups, they are happy to jump in the water any time of year, but a cool dip in the summer months is their favorite. Sophie doesn't miss out on swimming, she just prefers to do it in the pool instead of the lake. | Thanks for sharing, Janis! |
