| | Duchess Had to Wait for the Perfect Family | Duchess was rescued by an animal law enforcement team in March 2023 and brought to the Pennsylvania SPCA's Danville Center. When she arrived, she was incredibly thin and had dirt-covered brown fur. After a few weeks, she emerged from her shell and started showing her happy and healthy self. | The shelter worked to get her adopted, but weeks turned into months, and the staff started to get worried about Duchess. Finally, at a special adoption event, a family arrived with the hopes of meeting Duchess. This family had adopted Bear a year earlier, and he had a similar story. Now, the two of them are the best of friends, and Duchess was able to say goodbye to all the shelter employees who had become her temporary family. |

| | | How to Occupy a Dog Left Home Alone | Most dog owners wish they could spend all their time hanging out with their canine companions, but with work and other obligations, your dog will inevitably spend some time on their own. | If you're worried about your dog getting bored or lonely, there are a few tips and tricks you can do to engage them even when they're home alone. | Don't let them feel locked up. Open up your curtains and let the natural light come in. It's OK to keep dogs out of certain rooms, but determine the spaces that are dog-friendly and let them roam. Ask someone you trust to visit. Whether you hire a dog walker or just have a family member or friend stop by, think about giving your pup a visitor mid-day for some pets and exercise. Change out their toys. Rotate which toys your dog has access to while you're gone. If they see the same toys day in and day out, they will likely become bored. Use intelligence games. These puzzles and games help dogs use their minds and get mental stimulation. Try hiding some of your pup's favorite treats inside a toy. Leave the radio or television on. Small noises can help distract and keep their anxiety at bay while home alone. Turn on your radio or your TV to give them some background noise. Stimulate their nose. Hide treats when the dogs aren't paying attention. Dogs will use their hunting instincts to find the treats and give them something to do.

| | | DOTD - Meet Finley and EllieMae | Another great way to stay occupied when the humans are away is to have a best friend by your side, like these two featured dogs. Finley and EllieMae were hot after their walk, so they cooled off in the shade on the glider. They are both 15-week-old Mini Doxies. Thanks for sharing, Barbera! |
