| | An Unlikely Pairing Helps Adoption Rates Soar | It can be tough to motivate teenagers to run, but one PE teacher had an idea that has had a huge impact. Luis Escobar is the cross-country coach at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria, California. While looking for ideas to keep kids training over summer break, he came up with the brilliant plan of pairing them up with shelter dogs. He contacted a Santa Barbara animal shelter, and they agreed to partner. | The organization made a list of dogs that needed exercise in the shelter, and the kids were paired up to take the dogs out for a run. Some dogs were out of shape, so they were capped at one mile. The kids got to do something fun for them, and the dogs got the energy out on these runs. This helped make them more adoptable when potential families visited the shelter. | On one of the runs, a young man was paired with a small dog named Fred, who was too worn out to finish the run, but the two bonded so much that his family adopted Fred. Since then, many adoptions have happened within the program. Other schools around the country have incorporated this idea into their PE programs. What a perfect partnership! |

| | | The 3-3-3 Rule for Dog Adoptions | Bringing a new dog into your home can be a magical time, but it also comes with challenges. The 3-3-3 rule provides a helpful guideline for families making this big change. Understanding these timelines can help you all adjust at the appropriate speed. You don't want to rush your new dog into uncomfortable situations, so stick with this framework for a smooth transition. | The first 3 days are about your dog acclimating to their new home. It's overwhelming and a little scary for your dog, so keep their introductions to people outside the family minimal and allow them time to explore your home. | The first 3 weeks should include household rules and boundaries so your pup knows what it is allowed to do. This begins the bonding process and establishes the foundation of your relationship. | The first 3 months can include socialization, training, and new experiences. You'll start seeing more of your dog's personality because they will feel more secure and settled. By the end of this period, your dog will start to feel like a family member. | By sticking to these guidelines, you won't rush into things too early. It's important to allow the dog to learn about their new home to help them feel settled. After those first three months, you'll want to continue introductions, new experiences, and training. Your dog will show you their love and gratitude before you know it. |
