| | It's a Dog Life... On a Boat | Living on the open water sounds like a dream for many of us, but we couldn't imagine leaving our pups behind. Brett and Jade Evans figured it out with their dogs, Dingo and Penny. After fixing up an older vessel, they moved onto a boat full-time in 2020 during the pandemic. | The dogs adapted to boat life faster than the humans and have been lucky never to experience seasickness. They love the feeling of wind on their faces while sailing. The dogs are both high-energy, and it's easy for them to jump on and off the boat. If they are covered in sand, the couple has them swim the last few yards back to the boat off the dinghy to rinse off. | What about going to the bathroom? The dogs love heading to shore with their humans and running all over the beach. For long passages, the dogs have learned to go to the bathroom on the front deck of the boat. They call it the "poop deck." | Thanks to harnesses and tethers, the dogs are safe while sailing. No matter how the boat moves, the dogs are strapped in and safe. Most of the time, the boat is anchored close to shore. This has allowed the whole family to explore many remote spots around the world. Sounds like a perfect situation to us! |

| | | A Safety Checklist for Bringing Your Dog on a Boat | If Dingo and Penny have got you dreaming about your dog out on the water with you, there are a few things you should consider before bringing them on board. First, ask a few questions about your dog to decide if they would enjoy it. Do they love water activities? Is motion sickness a problem for them? Are there any local laws about dogs on boats? Will they have an easy place to rest on the boat? If everything checks out, make sure you have all the right supplies. | Dogs need life jackets. Even good swimmers get tired, so it's important to have a floating device for your dog. Choosing one with bright colors will help you keep an eye on them when swimming as well. Pack paw protection and a way to keep them in the shade so they don't suffer any burns while out in the sun. | Fiberglass boats are slippery, so consider a nonslip mat. If you're planning a longer boat day, pack puppy pads or astroturf to give your pup a place to go to the bathroom. Keep fresh water and food on board. Talk to everyone on the boat about the plan if the dog goes overboard and keep dog first aid supplies nearby. Once you have your safety plan in place, you'll be ready for a day of fun in the sun with your canine companions. |

| | Thank you to Hill's for sponsoring The Daily Dig. | | Dogs Have Different Boat Personalities | These two pups love getting out on the boat, but every dog enjoys the water differently—just like humans. The Golden Retriever loves jumping off and climbing back up the ladder, while the Border Collie is much happier cruising with the wind in her fur and the entertainment of her wild brother. Watch them both enjoy this magical adventure! |
